The Music Zone

In the Music Zone we will dive into the inexhaustible ocean of popular music and discover that music is much more than mere entertainment. Music can amaze and provoke, and it can be unsettling, soothing, captivating, and profound. Therefore, we will listen to a lot of different music — in all likelihood, music that most people would not normally put on in their living rooms. Throughout the semester, we will build a language for music. It is precisely through this language that we can delve deeper into music, develop our listening skills, and create a greater understanding of music as an art form.

In the lessons, you will be equipped to analyze the music we listen to through various methods of analysis. We will therefore build an understanding of the many elements that play a role in music’s final expression, including the historical and genre-specific context, as well as the technological framework and recording techniques. Finally, we will explore music in its various forms of expression, including albums, EPs, studio sessions, and concerts.
